Every FMX rider remembers the first time they watched someone throw a backflip and land it clean — bike and body coming round together, back wheel kissing the dirt exactly where it should. What almost nobody tells you afterwards is how unglamorous the road to that moment actually is. It's not a talent you're born with. It's a foam pit, a ramp angle measured in degrees, and a few hundred repetitions that go wrong before one goes right.
Freestyle isn't motocross with tricks bolted on
Motocross racing rewards the rider who gets round a lap fastest — corner speed, line choice, holeshot starts, staying upright when someone dive-bombs you into a berm. Freestyle motocross throws that scoring system out entirely. A run at an FMX event is judged on amplitude, trick difficulty, style and how clean the landing looks, and the track itself is nothing like a race circuit. It's a straight run-up, a take-off ramp, air, and a landing ramp — sometimes three or four of them in sequence, built at angles specific to the trick being attempted.
The bikes diverge just as sharply once you look past the badge on the tank. A production motocross bike is tuned for suspension travel that soaks up whoops and braking bumps at speed. A freestyle bike is set up for a completely different job: predictable mid-air behaviour, a seat and subframe stripped for grip during body inversions, and a throttle response that doesn't surge the moment a rider's weight comes off the pegs. The backflip progression nobody skips
No credible coach lets a rider attempt a backflip on dirt first. The accepted path starts on a trampoline or a diving-style setup to build the body's rotational awareness — riders without the bike, learning what a full backward rotation actually feels like in the air. From there it moves to a foam pit: a purpose-built ramp firing the rider and bike into a deep block-foam landing that forgives a badly timed rotation instead of punishing it. Only once the rotation is consistent in foam does anyone talk about dirt.
What the ramp geometry actually does
The take-off ramp on a backflip setup typically sits around 60–70 degrees, steep enough to convert forward speed into vertical lift rather than distance. Riders come in at a controlled, repeatable speed — not flat-out — because the rotation depends on the compression of the ramp transferring predictably into the bike, and an inconsistent approach speed is one of the most common reasons a rotation comes up short or over-rotates. Weight transfer starts the moment the front wheel leaves the lip: a hard pull back on the bars, a tuck of the knees toward the chest, and a deliberate spot on the landing ramp the rider picks out before they've even left the ground.

Footpegs often move rearward too, which sounds like a small change and isn't — it shifts the whole balance point the rider works from when the bike's weight comes off the wheels entirely.
Riders training seriously tend to run a 250cc four-stroke like a KTM 250 SX-F rather than the bigger 450s favoured in racing, because the lighter chassis is easier to throw and catch mid-air and the power delivery is gentler off the lip. That's a genuine trade-off, not a universal rule: bigger, more experienced riders attempting the largest tricks — triple backflips, double grabs at height — often go back to a 450 for the extra momentum a heavier bike carries through a long rotation. Buy the bike to match the trick you're actually training, not the one you're hoping to land in six months.
What it actually costs to get started in the UK
Nobody gets into freestyle motocross cheaply, and pretending otherwise does new riders a disservice. A used 250cc four-stroke suitable for freestyle training runs somewhere between £3,000 and £6,000 depending on age and hours, while a new KTM 250 SX-F lists north of £8,500 before a single freestyle modification. Then there's access. Foxhill Park in Wiltshire and Hawkstone Park in Shropshire are among the better-known UK motocross venues that freestyle riders use for general track time, alongside a growing number of smaller private parks running dedicated foam-pit days aimed specifically at freestyle progression rather than lap times. None of these compare to a purpose-built freestyle training compound, and riders serious about competing internationally often travel to facilities in mainland Europe where foam-pit and airbag infrastructure is more established.
